Dato Dr Emmanuel Benson a recipient of the One Award for best entrepreneur in SME segment is the driving force behind Smart Trends International, responsible for mapping out the strategic business plans and vision for the company that has seen a five-fold increase in revenue in just three years.
During his tenure, Smart Trends has carved a niche in the education and training segment, with a well-established, proven track record among blue-chip clients and relevant government agencies (HRDF, MOHR, and MOHE).
Dato is known for his business transformation expertise and constantly converts his ‘big picture’ ideas into reality with a select team of highly experienced senior management with relevant experience.
Dato has also seen the company establishing a regional footprint with the opening of Smart Trends International training centres in Sri Lanka and Vietnam and partnership with global certification body NCFE from UK.
To further strengthen their foothold in this sector, the Group will see the opening of an international school to the setting up of Malaysia’s first open Learning & Jobs portal and specialist talent search and recruitment agency to an entity to assist foreign students to pursue further education in Malaysia.
Dato Dr Benson is a Fellow of the prestigious Professional Management and Accounting body of the United Kingdom and Australia and holds a MBA and PHD from Ireland.

Chief Operating Officer
Mahes Balakrishnan is Smart Trends International’s Chief Operating Officer. He is responsible for overseeing the company’s business development and overall business operations of the group.
Mahes has a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Real Estate.
He is among the select few in Malaysia who has parlayed his expertise in corporate real estate into a career spanning more than 17 years specializing in property development, project management, consultancy and corporate services management. Mahes has a track record for leadership in delivering results in complex corporate and large scale business transformation initiatives.
The ability to translate goals into action and lead large teams into delivering required results has landed him with the key task at Smart Trends to activate the `big picture’ ideas of the Chairman from building the team to strategic planning, whilst meeting timelines and budgets and above all, delivering the results.
Prior to joining Smart Trends International, Mahes served at various senior leadership positions in various multinational corporations including at Halliburton as the Regional Head for Real Estate Services & Travel for Asia Pacific, at Ericsson as the Real Estate Director for South East Asia & Oceania and at Shell as the Portfolio Manager for Asia Pacific. Mahes was awarded the Corporate Real Estate Executive of the Year 2016 for Malaysia.
Basil John Fernandez
Director of Strategic Communication & Business Development
Basil is a communications specialist who brings to Smart Trends over 20 years of experience in public relations to advertising. He was the founder of Compass Communications and build the agency to the top #5 in Malaysia and spend 13 years at MDK Consultants (part of WPP Group), as General Manager in his last eight years and had a stint with advertising agency AMC, as account manager on Affin Bank, Bata and Celcom.
A creative strategic thinker who is capable of providing creative solutions cutting across brands to industry, with a focus on meeting core communication and business objectives.
At Smart Trends, Basil will be responsible for the Group communications from branding, corporate to public relations and advertising and is part of the management team, playing a leadership role on the strategic communications side to translate business plans from positioning to key messaging and ensuring they reach pre-determined target audiences. He is also able to leverage on his vast corporate network build over the years.
Basil holds a professional qualification in public relations from the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia and CAM Foundation (UK).
Anand plays a dual role at Smart Trends, overseeing the finance department to business development, from sales to marketing. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) majoring in Accounting & Finance from Lincoln University (NZ).
Anand worked three years in Mahumas Group, as Finance Manager before joining Metroplex Berhad as Sales Administrative Manager. Following which, he worked as Business Development Manager at Chase Perdana Berhad for six years.
Anand also worked briefly in Manufacturing when he joined Diayo Die-Casting as General Manager Sales and Marketing after which he joined GS Engineering Works, holding the position of General Manager Business Development.
Director – EB Talents & EB Jobs
Thiagaraja Balakrishnan is EB Talents (M) Sdn Bhd Director of Operations. He is responsible for overseeing the company’s business development, special turnkey projects and all operational aspects.
Thiaga holds an Honours Degree in Food Science and Technology from Universiti Putra Malaysia and has vast operational management experience in the food manufacturing industry having served as Manufacturing Heads for Merychef Foods, GSF Pacific Foods and Corn Product Corporation.
Nevertheless his consummate passion is in the recruitment industry in assisting and coaching individuals in developing their career and assisting organisations in acquiring the right talent, which saw him heading operations (as founder) with B&P Consultancy and Services, and Agency Pekerjaan Biztalent and Placements Sdn Bhd.
Believing totally in the philosophy of serving with a personal touch, he has translated his expertise in food manufacturing to build a network of key talent in this industry and worked closely with MNCs, specifically Nestle in fulfilling their needs.
He is also very adept in the IT and Financial sectors. Todate, EB Talents has successfully recruited, trained and placed talent with global MNCs to senior positions. EB Talents focusses on senior management search and EB Jobs on general recruitment across a broad spectrum of industries.
C-Green Asia – Director
Nishan is responsible for marketing and operations for our NCFE certified training centre in Seremban and specific training programmes under the group. He is a true-blue marketer and a hands-on team player with a perseverance to pursue any given tasks until they are duly fulfilled as per client’s expectations and requirements, is his forte.
